After an all-too-brief respite of barely a week, chaos and violence reigned in multiple locations in Hong Kong this past weekend as demonstrators clashed with police. On Sunday, as the city marked its 12th straight weekend of protests, a policeman fired a warning shot in the air after officers were chased and beaten by anti-government protesters wielding iron pipes and rods. Earlier, police for the first time fired water cannons as the city grappled with a new level of unprecedented violence. This past week we used the temporary peace to look at the bigger picture of why efforts to make Hong Kong youth patriotic have run into problems and we talked to mainlanders living in the city reconsidering their options. What will this week bring? More violence or a return to normalcy, whatever that means these days? Follow our weekly newsletter for a selection of our best-read pieces.
