 | | Dear Reader | | For a while, Hong Kong’s new normal was this: weekday calm, weekend clashes. But on Monday, radicals unleashed a new strategy of weekday mayhem blocking arterial roads and rail tracks, crippling the MTR. Monday also went down as one of the most violent days of the social unrest, now in its sixth month, as a policeman shot a protester and a man was torched by the black-clad crowd. The ominous start to the week has several backstories. Last week, a student died after falling from a car park in mysterious circumstances, fuelling the anger of protesters. Then, a pro-Beijing lawmaker was knifed and seven pan-democrats were arrested. As her city churned, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, galvanised by her Beijing trip where she won the support of President Xi Jinping, warned of "wishful thinking" if protesters expected the violence to bring the government to its knees. The impasse has worsened. Follow our continuing coverage. Zuraidah Ibrahim, Deputy Executive Editor |
