Their numbers may be down but protesters embarked on a chaotic “shopping" campaign over the weekend before Christmas, sparking rowdy scenes at malls as radicals vandalised shops and police used pepper spray.
A rally on Sunday in support of China's Uygurs turned ugly when protesters desecrated the national flag and riot police trying to subdue some radicals were surrounded and attacked by a mob, prompting an officer to draw his gun. Earlier in the week, an armed teenage suspect intercepted by officers shot at them before being subdued. The suspect was linked to a firearms and bomb plot related to the protests.
In neighbouring Macau, President Xi Jinping's glowing praise for the casino hub, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its handover, was seen as both an indirect rebuke of Hong Kong and a “to-do” list for the city to get its act together. Meanwhile, a survey commissioned by the Post found most Hongkongers losing faith in police and one in five supporting protest violence.
While bringing you the latest about the turmoil, we are also grabbing a moment of intermittent calm to wish our readers a Merry Christmas!
