Dear Reader

Just two days before China celebrates 70 years of Communist rule on October 1, protesters and police clashed again bitterly in Hong Kong on Sunday, as the force made over 100 arrests. On Saturday, before fighting predictably broke out, the city had gathered to mark five years since 2014's Occupy sit-ins for greater democracy. Earlier in the week, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor held her first community dialogue. Except for a handful, nearly all the participants blamed the government for being ineffective. Nearly four months on, there appears to be no end in sight to the unrest, first sparked by an extradition bill. Delving deeper into the deep-rooted issues in society, the Post sought to explore whether the lack of affordable housing is fuelling divisions. The answer? Depends on whom you ask. Tuesday's National Day looks set to spark more clashes. Follow the latest developments on scmp.com.
