Dear Reader

Hong Kong people have spoken. And the message was a stinging rebuke of embattled leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and her administration: they cannot continue as if it’s business as usual after six months of a protest crisis that appears to have no resolution in sight. Voters made plain their dissatisfaction with her leadership and her allies, the pro-Beijing district councillors who saw their control of 18 councils obliterated to just one as democrats took over the reins. As we study the figures to see if there are deeper undercurrents to the democrats’ landslide victory, the big question is in our deeply polarised society, how dramatically did the vote share shift? What impact did protest violence have on voters? Was their anger towards the government greater than their antipathy towards violence? We have put together some reports for you here.
