Will it be a Happy New Year for Hong Kong?

Hong Kong Protests
Dear Reader

More than half a year ago, no one could have imagined the political climate Hong Kong is now stewing in. Christmas last week was hardly a peaceful celebration as police fired tear gas and scenes of chaos spoiled the merry-making in several parts of the city while a number of churches held mass services earlier to avoid trouble. Now, a mammoth protest is being planned for New Year’s Day. The protests that began as peaceful marches sparked by the reviled extradition bill have since morphed into an anti-government movement, often descending into violence with protesters and police clashing repeatedly. More than 7,000 people have been arrested. Fewer protesters seem to be out these days but no one believes the crisis will be resolved anytime soon. As we greet the New Year, here is a look back at 10 of our best-read stories on the protests. Follow our coverage at scmp.com.
