| | A message from our editor The world's two largest economies are moving closer to a trade war. Washington targeted China's tech strategy by announcing punitive tariffs on Chinese tech products worth US$50 billion, while Beijing slapped 25 per cent tariffs on US products including soybeans, cars and planes. China's move hit US president Donald Trump where it hurt - American farming states, which showed strong Republican support during the 2016 US elections. He later retaliated by instructing the US Trade Representative's office to consider US$100 billion of additional tariffs. Beijing stressed it does not want confrontation but will defend its interest "at any cost". Over the weekend, negotiations quietened down - until a friendly tweet from Trump stating that "President Xi and I will always be friends". On Tuesday, China's president Xi Jinping gave a speech at the annual Boao Forum for Asia, known as the "Asian Davos", affirming China's commitment to opening market access and strengthening intellectual property protections. Here are the latest highlights about the simmering US-China trade war. | | |
